From Harvard Medical School publishing:

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation?

According to Harvard Medical School, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive form of brain stimulation used to treat depression.

TMS works by delivering focused magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain known to regulate mood. These pulses help stimulate underactive brain regions associated with depression.

Key features of TMS therapy:

  • Non-invasive (no surgery or implants)

  • No anesthesia or sedation required

  • Performed entirely outside the body

  • Patients remain awake and alert during treatment

  • Minimal systemic side effects compared to medications or ECT

Is TMS Safe?

TMS is generally well tolerated and considered safe when administered by trained medical professionals.

Possible side effects:

  • Mild headache or scalp discomfort during or after treatment (most common)

  • Rare but serious risk of seizures

Because of this risk, TMS may not be appropriate for individuals with:

  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders

  • A history of serious head injury

  • Certain neurological conditions

A thorough psychiatric evaluation is completed before treatment to determine eligibility.

Does TMS work For Depression?

Clinical studies show that TMS therapy is effective for many individuals with treatment-resistant depression.

  • 50–60% of patients who did not respond to antidepressant medications experience a meaningful improvement

  • About one-third of patients achieve full remission, meaning depressive symptoms resolve completely

While results are encouraging, it’s important to understand that—like most depression treatments—results are not always permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Approximately 50% to 60% of people with depression who have tried and failed to receive benefit from medications experience a clinically meaningful response with TMS. About one-third of these individuals experience a full remission, meaning that their symptoms go away completely. It is important to acknowledge that these results, while encouraging, are not permanent. Like most other treatments for mood disorders, there is a high recurrence rate. However, most TMS patients feel better for many months after treatment stops, with the average length of response being a little more than a year. Some will opt to come back for subsequent rounds of treatment. A real-world study reported an 83% response rate. This means that 83% of patients that completed their NeuroStar treatment cycle saw measurable improvement in their depression symptoms.**,12

The same real-world study reported a 62% remission rate. This means that 62% of patients that completed their NeuroStar treatment cycle likely wouldn’t be diagnosed with MDD if they were first being evaluated by their doctor.**,12

Whereas the largest prospective clinical trial of major depressive disorder ever conducted, the STAR*D study, showed that likelihood of remission decreases with every subsequent medication.6,7,17,18"
